the view from here.
2020-2021
This body of work explores the same familiar content I have found endlessly fascinating for years as an artist: our shared humanity through the personality of local trees and foliage- but this time, with a shift in perspective.
“The View From Here” is about seeing in color, finding joy and adventure close to home, and honest reflection of our shortcomings and fragility. It’s also joyful and hopeful. Paint is applied with modernist mark-making in mind: Evidence of the artist’s hand and intuition, embracing the humanity of creating.
2020 brought with it uncertainty, new awareness, and growth. As an artist, I allowed myself to respond slowly and without judgment, making what felt right for the moment and for each individual painting. For months, pieces felt disjointed and disconnected, until the very end of the creation period where they fell into place. The work you see here is the result of a continued studio practice throughout the challenges of 2020.
